Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can overseas exchange courses be credited toward General Education (GE) credits?
Overseas courses must correspond to NTNU GE courses (with identical or similar names) and have similar content to be eligible. You may submit relevant documents to the Center for General Education for review to apply for GE credits; however, if there is no corresponding GE course at NTNU, you cannot apply for GE credit.
If there is no corresponding course, can I apply for free elective credits?
If an overseas course does not have a corresponding course at NTNU, you can apply for free elective credits. You must attach a course syllabus (including teaching hours and progress) for review by the Center for General Education. A maximum of 3 credits can be granted per course for free electives, and the course name must be identical to the name on the transcript.
What is the credit conversion method?
In principle, 18 teaching hours equal 1 credit, and 2 ECTS equal 1 credit. However, the actual conversion standard is primarily based on the actual teaching hours listed in the course syllabus.
Can I apply for credit registration for overseas exchange courses?
Credit registration is based on the original number of credits and will not count toward graduation requirements. This process does not require review by the Center for General Education. If there are doubts regarding the number of credits, the Center will review it based on the principle of 18 hours per credit. If a subject you applied for is rejected for credit transfer, you may switch the application to credit registration.
Can language courses be credited?
Only formal university courses are eligible for credit transfer. Non-formal language courses (e.g., those from language centers or language schools) can only be registered, not transferred for credit.
What if an English transcript cannot be provided?
If an English transcript is unavailable, please choose one of the following methods for credit transfer or registration:
  • An English syllabus containing the course name, stamped by the exchange school or department.
  • English transcript data translated by a government-registered translation agency.
  • Transcript data translated by yourself and verified with a stamp from the department or department head.
What if an English or Chinese syllabus cannot be provided?
If the syllabus is not in Chinese or English, please translate it yourself, mark it as "Self-translated Syllabus," and sign it. If teaching hour information is missing, please provide the number of hours or the class schedule to facilitate credit conversion.
