Vision & Mission

The curriculum planning of high-quality general education requires a clear vision. We studied the philosophies of general education adopted by well-known universities worldwide, took into consideration our own unique teaching staff as well as educational philosophy, and after discussions by the General Education Task Force led by the Vice President, proposed the following guiding principles for the implementation of general education at National Taiwan Normal University:

Philosophy of General Education

Based on NTNU’s educational objectives and direction of development, the university chose the motto “Extensive and Elegant, NTNU Master” as the basis for our philosophy of general education, emphasizing the idea of holistic development for individuals. The following two key themes are included: 

(1)    Enabling students to develop their own life, individuality and subjectivity so that they can view the world from different perspectives and understand the objective scenarios associated with different humanistic, social and natural aspects of their own life.

(2)    Enabling students to participate actively in societal affairs as citizens. Therefore, when we ask our students to enroll in courses in different disciplines, our objective is not so much as having them gain additional knowledge in another domain or merely let them have fun in the process of learning. Instead, our main purpose is to allow students to gain a different point of view and to enable them to understand their own life and the social environment better through these views, as well as to allow them to contemplate their responses to public affairs issues.


The Objectives of General Education

Under the “Extensive and Elegant, NTNU Master” blueprint for general education, our development objectives for general education are as follows:

1.      To develop good language skills: 
To enable students to express their own ideas clearly and accurately. Through the learning of foreign languages, students will be able to enhance their ability to obtain information available at both home and abroad as well as to develop an international perspective.

2.      To be equipped with accessible paths to knowledge:
To enable students to learn the basic concepts in different disciplines, so that they can explain human situations with different knowledge viewpoints, including aspects such as self-development, humanistic society and the natural world. Through these different paths to knowledge, students will learn how to gain access to the important issues facing the human race.

3.      Cultivate the beauty and sentiment of life: 
To guide students in the appreciation for and construction of beauty in life, including music, art and literature appreciation, as well as the discovery of the delicate life creations around us.

4.      Develop a multicultural mode of thinking: 
To enable students to understand the social situations of different ethnic groups, religions and gender, and to allow them to appreciate different values that have been formed as a result. Respect and appreciation for the differences between cultures are used as a vehicle to seek peaceful coexistence and common prosperity as well as sustainable development for human civilization.

5.      Develop communication and leadership skills:
Cultivate the ability of students to perform rational analysis, as well as the ability to coordinate different opinions and seek consensus through communication.
