The Curriculum

·     Fulfilling a rigorous curriculum review mechanism
In the 2007 academic year, 15 representatives from all NTNU colleges as well as external general education experts and scholars were invited to form a permanent curriculum review organization – the “General Education Center Curriculum Committee,” whose responsibility is to conduct rigorous review on the curriculum in accordance with the objectives, essence and expertise of the teaching staff in each discipline of the University’s core curriculum.

·     Establishing general education course offering guidelines
In order to make courses available to students in each NTNU campus and to ensure the quality of general education course offerings, we have established the University’s “General Education Curriculum Implementation Guidelines,” which provides instructors with general principles on offering courses according to the target audience, procedure, review criteria, number of courses and number of students, course outline, criteria for offering or not offering a course, scope of course evaluation, and the maximum number of credits students can receive. A further objective is to meet the needs of students regarding their curricular requirements as well as to control the quality of general education courses. 

·     Implementing studies aimed at improving the quality of general education courses and surveys on student demand for courses
In order to understand the current status of the University’s general education implementation so that the quality of courses can be improved and the students’ curricular requirements can be met, we have compiled a report specifically for the Gongguan Campus based on research conducted on the following three aspects: status of course offering, results of implementation by teaching assistants and course evaluation. The report will be used by the General Education Center for curriculum planning purposes.

Students

·     Establishing the “General Education Awards”
 In order to fully implement the “Extensive and Elegant, NTNU Master” spirit of NTNU’s general education and to encourage students to appreciate the significance of general education in their university career, at the end of the second semester of each academic year, experts and scholars are invited to conduct evaluation of students based on the average grades achieved for general education and service course(s), the number of instances of participation in general education activities and learning performance, as well as learning records of participation in general education activities within and outside the University. Two types of awards are granted: “General Education Learning Award” and the “General Education Excellence Award.”

·     Compiling student course selection guide for general education curriculum
To compile course selection guide to help students plan their enrollment according to their learning plans. The guide contains the following: General Education and University Learning Career, NTNU General Education Curriculum Framework and Credits, Advice on Thematic Course Enrollment and Students’ Learning Portfolios.

·     Building students’ core competencies
The core domains, as the backbone of the new curriculum, are established to enable students to master important competencies so as to achieve the learning objectives of general education. Therefore, in addition to conducting research on relevant literature and the general education competencies established by internationally renowned universities, we have also invited the instructional committees of the six core domains to discuss the competency objectives of each domain, so that NTNU’s own general education core competencies can be developed. These core competencies can be employed to check the progress of students in general education and used as the basis for course planning.

Instructors

·     Implementation of “Excellent General Education Instructor Incentives” program
In order to encourage teaching excellence among general education course instructors, the incentive program shall be officially implemented starting from the second semester of the 2008 academic year. Full-time instructors who have taught general education courses for two consecutive semesters and are teaching a course in the Core Curriculum in the current academic year are eligible for participation in this program. A preliminary evaluation based on the “End of semester learning survey results” and the reasonableness of the assessment of students’ academic accomplishment shall be conducted. A final evaluation shall be carried out based on the instructors’ course outlines, course materials and instructor profiles via a selection meeting. Three instructors shall be selected and recognized at a public event, and each instructor shall be awarded a prize of NT$30,000. To improve the teaching competence of our general education instructors, the award winners shall be requested to conduct teaching demonstrations so that their teaching experience can be shared with other instructors.

·     Formation of instructional committees on the curriculum for the six core domains
Six instructional committees have been formed for the six core domains respectively, each of which is staffed by an instructor and an assistant responsible for the domain. Committee members meet as required to discuss the following issues: 
  A.   To discuss the competence indicators for each domain.
  B.    To develop requirements for course assessment in each domain and establish a reasonable assessment standard for general education courses in order to encourage students to engage in active learning
  C.   To hold instructional seminars for professors and instructors to facilitate academic exchanges.
  D.   To publish and digitize course materials developed for various domains for both instructors and students.

·     Providing subsidies to instructors for the development of general education teaching materials
Regarding the “Development of core domain teaching materials”: Nine instructors, including Lecturer Yen, Ai-chu, have completed the compilation of core domain course materials for general education. The topics include: “Environmental Literacy of Modern Citizens,” ”Eco-tourism,” , “Tracing Darwin’s Path,” “Discovery of Privacy,” “Pros and Cons of Genetically Modified Foods,” “The Expressive Art of Famous Expressions of Wisdom,” “Religions, Books of Good, Trial in Hell: The Invisible Legal Culture,” “Puccini’s Tosca” and “Discussions on the Discrepancies of Cultural Shift.”

·     Compiling Core Curriculum Course Delivery Handbook
The compilation of Core Curriculum Course Delivery Handbook, which contains an introduction to the Core Curriculum framework, course delivery procedures and course availability Q&A. The handbook provides detailed information to help instructors understand the structure of general education courses and answer any questions they may have regarding the topic.
